It’s coming this week. The Defiant Vented Lightsaber, a.k.a – The Kylo Ren lightsaber. I’m surprised to see it as I was under the impression they couldn’t get this to work in-game. I’m glad to be wrong about that.
The lightsaber is part of the Revenge pack that releases today. It is a platinum quality item, meaning it’s meant to be extremely rare. To put it in perspective, the Unstable Arbiter’s Lightsaber and Dualsaber were also platinum items. Expect to find it on the GTN, and expect to pay upwards of 30-40 million for one early on. That’s the price range I’m expecting on Shadowlands.
I understand why BioWare might want this to be such a rare item. Just like the Unstable Arbiter’s Lightsaber this is now the new hotness and everyone is going to want one. Should this really be that uncommon? In this era of the Old Republic, the crossguard lightsaber is hardly a weapon out-of-time, right?
According to Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary, “Kylo Ren’s unusual lightsabers is an ancient design, dating back thousands of years to the Great Scourge of Malachor.”
If Malachor sounds familiar to you it’s because it figured heavily into KOTOR II, and was recently seen in the season two finale of Star Wars Rebels, where a crossguard lightsaber was found.
This type of lightsaber is old and the design could even pre-date the era of the Old Republic. It’s hard to know because Malachor is part of stories that are both canon and non-canon.
What does seem clear is that this weapon is not common in the world that Kylo Ren lives in, but it’s not unreasonable to think it could be a little more common in ours. What do you think, should it maybe be bumped from a platinum to a silver? I wouldn’t mind that.
