Army of Alts vs Army of One

For the better part of a year I spent time amassing an army of alts. By the time RotHC was released I had seven level 50 characters; Five Imps and two Pubs. My goal was to experience every class story, have one of every Crew Skill, and be 100% self sufficient.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel put us back  in leveling mode, and since I needed to get my main toon Ops ready, I devoted a fair bit of time to focusing on just him. He’s more than ready now and I’ve been contemplating getting my other characters back up to max level, but I don’t feel compelled to hurry.

You see, I no longer believe in the power of the army of alts. Since focusing on just a single character I’ve found that I’m better geared, my companions are better geared, and despite having one maxed out set of Crew Skills (Biochem, Bioanalysis and Diplomacy), I’m rolling in credits.

I don’t need to spend a lot of time leveling up other toon’s Crew Skills, gathering various mats and then logging from one character to the other to make my own augment kits and augments. Instead, I just run some dailies and sell stuff on the GTN, and then buy the damn things off of the GTN; hopefully at a decent price.

I’m finding a lot more convenience from having just one toon do everything. Alts. are fun. They allow you to explore more of the game. They allow you to run on multiple Ops teams, and they offer great variety. They are also a drain on your resources.

One would think that more bodies in the mix would mean more income and quality of life, but I find that simply isn’t the case. I’m not saying it isn’t possible, but it takes a lot more effort than just having one toon. Eventually I’ll get my team leveled up, but for now I’m content to role with just an army of one.

May the Force Be With You!
