How Do You Drive This Thing?

Today over at the WHU Frostheim solicits and gives advice for a returning hunter (hint: his name rhymes with BRK). My advice? Learn the MM spec inside and out. This post is what they like to call a fromage.

Hunter’s mark up.

“Who’s tanking?”

*waits for a reply*

Boss engaged!? But…

/Misdirection

“Healer just go one shot and needs a brez?”

Okay so we’re MM now. A theoretical unstoppable cyborg killing machine. Let’s do this.

/Rapid Fire
/Readiness
/Aimed Shot
/Aimed Shot
/Steady Shot
/Steady Shot
/Aimed Shot

Now we’re cookin’.

Wait, what about Serpent Sting and Chimera Shot? These are signature shots and important right? Fire? Yes? No? Maybe? Screw it,

/Serpent Sting
/Steady Shot
/Steady Shot
/Rapid Fire
/Aimed Shot
/Aimed Shot

Did Serpent Sting just fall off?

/Serpent Sting
/Chimera Shot. Ha!

Okay boss is below 80%. Keep casting Aimed Shot? Sure.

/A—I—M—E—D S—H— Crap, we need to move.

Hello Arcane Shot.

/Arcane Shot
/Arcane Shot
/Arcane Shot

Hey, where’d Improved Steady Shot go?

/Steady Shot
/Steady Shot

/A—I—M—E—D S—H— Dang, we’re moving again.

Okay forget this. Standard Arcane Shot rotation engaged. Go!

/Steady Shot
/Arcane Shot
/Steady Shot

/Arcane Shot
/Steady Shot

/Arcane Shot

Wait something’s missing…

Horizontal boosters.

Alluvial Dampers?

Ow! That’s not it, bring my the Hydrospanner.

I don’t know how we’re going to get out of this one.

Execute range, finally.

/Kill Shot
/faceroll keyboard.

*boss dies*

“Sorry guys, had bad latency and the cat jumped up on the keyboard midway through.”

MM is perhaps the most complex and most unforgiving of the Hunter specs. It’s capable of producing large amounts of DPS that surpass SV and BM, but only if you don’t falter with it’s rotation. Not only that but the exact rotations you should use are situational and rely greatly on your skill as a hunter. One or two slips and you’ll find yourself in the middle of the dps pack.

Now, I’m not saying you can’t or shouldn’t raid as SV or BM; I can and I do. Still, there’s a storm headed our way in patch 4.2. If Blizzard doesn’t make any adjustments then MM is poised to move further ahead than it already is. I’m making a point to learn this rotation inside and out now, before it becomes “mandatory” (which I hope it doesn’t).

Starting next week, I’ll dive into this tree looking at the do’s, don’ts and nuances that make up what may end up being our highest DPS spec.

Who knows, maybe I’ll even learn to play it along the way.

Good Hunting!

  1. "By the storm" do you mean MM's dps scales better with next tier raid gear and it will surpass SV and BM in dps ?

or are there buffs and nerfs on the way.

  2. Yes, I'm referring to the fact that MM's dps will scale better with the next tier of raid gear.

I know of no incoming buffs or nerfs at this point.
